Extended Producer Responsibility (Germany)

What is it?

Merchants who sell with Fruugo in Germany are required to provide proof of their compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation for Packaging, Batteries and Electrical Appliances (WEE). This legislation covers both primary (product) and secondary (shipping) packaging.

EPR is a legal requirement for marketplaces and producers to ensure that they are meeting their obligations. If you do not provide proof of your compliance, your products will not be listed for sale in Germany.

For more information on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Germany, please visit http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/verpackg/index.html regarding the German Packaging Law, and https://www.verpackungsregister.org/en/information-orientation/knowledge-base/general-information regarding producer registration.

What do I have to do?

If you sell products in Germany, and have not previously provided us with your LUCID ID and Tax Number, you’ll see a notification in Retailer Portal that some of your products are restricted due to EPR legislation.

You can share your information with us via Compliance Manager, which will update your product visibility for customers.

Please note:

  • If you do not sell products in Germany, you will not be required to provide a LUCID ID and therefore will not see the Compliance Manager module in Retailer Portal.

  • You must provide your LUCID ID and Tax Number as per the information shared with the register, otherwise our system will not be able to validate your information and your products may still be restricted.

Don’t have a LUCID ID?

If you don’t have a LUCID ID, you’ll need to register as a producer with the LUCID Packaging Register: https://lucid.verpackungsregister.org/ and for Batteries and Electrical Appliances (WEE) https://www.ear-system.de/ear-portal/#no-back.

Once you’ve signed up with the register, you’ll need to enter into an agreement with a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) and provide them with your LUCID ID. They’ll complete the next step of your registration and help you with submitting packaging volume reports to the register and paying fees.

You can view a list of all PROs on the Verpackungsregister website:

Alternatively, Landbell Group can provide support to Fruugo merchants:

After your PRO has completed the necessary steps, you’ll be included on the public register of producers. You are then able to share your LUCID ID with others to prove compliance with the German Packaging Law.
