Directive 2012/19/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 4 July 2012 on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

The revised WEEE Directive adopted in 2012 governs the disposal of waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The WEEE Directive ensures that all waste Electricals and Electronic Equipment is disposed of and recycled in a sustainable way when it reaches the end of its life to reduce the impact on the environment caused by electrical waste.ย

The WEEE Directive creates an obligation on producers (including manufacturers, importers and distributors) to finance a take-back scheme for the recycling of WEEE. Producers are also required to ensure that WEEE is collected and treated separately, directly from the consumer and free of charge. Producers placing WEEE onto the market must join a compliance scheme to manage this process.

Consumers should not dispose of WEEE with regular household waste. The wheelie bin symbol should be clearly labelled on the products to indicate that the product should be disposed of separately to other household waste.
