What is it?
Quick Links
Accurate product categories allow us to advertise your products effectively and enable customers to locate your products on our marketplace.
The product re-categorisation service validates the Fruugo category path that you have provided to us against your product data. It ensures that a valid Fruugo category path has been selected and that the category path provided best represents the product.
How does it work?
When you create a new product, our service processes your product data and determines whether or not the category is accurate.
To do this, the service combines all of your available product data – so your product’s title, description, and any populated attributes – and then works to identify the most appropriate category in the Fruugo category tree.
After your product has been processed, depending on the output, you may be charged a Retailer Content Fee.
The service applies to all newly created products, so if you want to avoid unnecessary fees, please take your time to ensure that you have assigned the most appropriate category to your product.
Please see Do I have to pay? to understand when a charge is payable.
What does UNCATEGORISED in the Merchant Category field mean?
If we can’t identify an appropriate category for your product, it means that your product’s data – title, description, and attributes – need to be improved.
You are free to list the product again but you must create a new product in your catalogue. Products with UNCATEGORISED merchant categories cannot be published to our marketplace, even if you update the affected product and associated SKUs. They are blocked from sale.
You cannot re-use the blocked product’s Product ID and SKU IDs. We do not allow duplicate Product IDs or SKU IDs in your catalogue. If you would like to re-use the blocked product’s GTIN, make sure to update the affected product’s STOCKSTATUS value to NOTAVAILABLE .
What does UNCLASSIFIED in the Fruugo Category field mean?
If we were able to identify an appropriate category for your product, but not determine a complete category path from your available product data, you might see UNCLASSIFIED in the Fruugo Category field.
In these scenarios, you are required to provide an extension to complete the category path for your product and remove the error. You can do this by updating the category path in your feed using an appropriate category path from the Fruugo Category Tree.
Here’s an example of what can cause this issue:
You provided a Merchant Category of:
Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Bottles
We determined the appropriate category path to be:
Apparel & Accessories > Clothing Accessories > Sunglasses
We were unable to determine the gender or age from your product data, and therefore marked the Fruugo Category as:
Unclassified
In this scenario, you’ll see the below errors and corresponding values in My Catalogue:
To resolve this, you can:
Use the Fruugo Category Tree to identify the appropriate extension for the recommended Merchant Category
Update your Merchant Category from:
To:
Once you’ve updated your product, you’ll see the below information icon and corresponding values in My Catalogue:
Can you categorise my products for me?
If you’d like Fruugo to categorise products on your behalf, you can simply select the first available Fruugo category path for your products (i.e. submit all of your products with the same category path) and we’ll assign the appropriate category for you. You can find the first category path in the Fruugo Category Tree.
How much does it cost?
The product re-categorisation service forms part of our Retailer Content Fees, outlined in our Terms and Conditions.
The fee is currently:
£0.015 per product listing
The fee is payable via the Fruugo invoicing process and is calculated on a per calendar month basis.
All merchants have an error margin threshold of 25% for created products each calendar month before being charged. If this error margin threshold is exceeded, with respect to incorrect categorisation of their products, a merchant shall be charged for 100% of all incorrectly categorised products within that calendar month.
Here’s an example:
Month | # of new products created | # of incorrectly assigned categories | Fee payable | Fee |
---|---|---|---|---|
August | 1,000 | 250 | No fee payable | £0.00 |
September | 1,000 | 500 | Fee payable | £7.50 |
Do I have to pay?
You will only be required to pay the fee if the service recommends a different category to the one that you have provided. Please see below for examples of the possible scenarios, and whether or not a fee is payable.
Scenario 1:
The product re-categorisation service recommends the same category that you have provided for your product.
Your product, and associated SKUs, will be unaffected
Example | Category | Fee payable |
---|---|---|
Merchant provided category | Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Bottles | No |
Product re-categorisation service category | Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Bottles |
Scenario 2:
The product re-categorisation service recommends a different, but similar category to the one that you have provided for your product.
Your product, and associated SKUs, will adopt the recommended category in the category field in both of the Merchant Category and Fruugo Category fields
You will see a tooltip on the Merchant Category field to notify you that the category field has been amended via the product re-categorisation service
Example | Category | Fee payable |
---|---|---|
Merchant provided category | Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Bottles | No |
Product re-categorisation service category | Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Care Timers |
Scenario 3:
The product re-categorisation service identified a category path that is wholly different to the one that you have provided for your product.
Your product, and associated SKUs, will adopt the recommended category in both of the Merchant Category and Fruugo Category fields
You will see a tooltip on the Merchant Category field to notify you that the category field has been amended via the product re-categorisation service
Example | Category | Fee payable |
---|---|---|
Merchant provided category | Baby & Toddler > Nursing & Feeding > Baby Bottles | Yes |
Product re-categorisation service category | Electronics > Arcade Equipment > Pinball Machines |
Scenario 4:
The product re-categorisation service could not identify an appropriate category.
Your product, and associated SKUs, will have a Merchant Category value of UNCATEGORISED
Your product, and associated SKUs, will have a Fruugo Category value of UNCLASSIFIED
Your product, and associated SKUs, will have a Quality Status of ERROR
This means that your product has low quality product data. To rectify this, you’ll need to create a new product with improved product data
Example | Category | Fee payable |
---|---|---|
Merchant provided category | UNCATEGORISED | Yes |
Product re-categorisation service category | UNCLASSIFIED |
Scenario 5:
You would like Fruugo to categorise your products for you.
Merchant provided category | Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies > Bird Supplies > Bird Cage Accessories > Bird Cage Bird Baths | Yes |
Product re-categorisation service category | Sporting Goods > Outdoor Recreation > Camping & Hiking > Compression Sacks |
